You Say Potato, I say CSA!

by Stephanie Dignan

CSA stands for Community Shared Agriculture, and it is one of the staples of life here in the Hudson Valley. Our farms are treasured, and they are best supported by the CSA venture of distributing shares of crops to members of the community. We have a number of available farm CSA’s local to Beacon, and this week we took a closer look:

Common Ground Farm U-Pick
For 12 weeks at less than $20/week you’ll enjoy harvesting your very own share of the freshest possible vegetables while getting outside, getting dirty, and getting involved in our community. We’ll grow a selection of tried-and-true summer favorites like squash, cucumbers, carrots, lettuce, and tomatoes, and you’ll also pick unique varieties of veggies like peppers, eggplants, and tomatillos. Each share will include fresh herbs and flowers.

Fishkill Farm
Throughout our 25-week-long CSA from June to November, members will receive a variety of organically grown vegetables and berries, as well as a wide assortment of apples, pears, and peaches from our orchard. Each week’s share will vary, encouraging members to cook creatively with new ingredients.

Poughkeepsie Farm Project
At Poughkeepsie Farm Project, we maximize your options. You can choose your season, your share size and your pick-up day, as well as your favorite produce. As a shareholder, you select: A working or non-working share. If you choose a work share, you get a discount on the cost of your share in exchange for working on the farm.
There are a number of different types of shares available at PFP.

The member will receive a share every week of the growing season. The shares consist of vegetables and herbs grown on our farm! In addition to a CSA share, members are invited to our Pick-Your-Own (PYO) fields once a week to partake in the harvest of flowers, and herbs!

Joining our CSA means you become a part of our family.  We share in the risks and rewards each season has to offer, support each other, our local food system, and the integrity of the land.

Most of our USDA Certified Organic produce is sold through our 120-share CSA program. Our members subscribe to a 24-week distribution period during which they enjoy 50 different vegetable crops. Each share is intended to fulfill the average weekly vegetable needs of a family of four, or two vegetarian adults. All share items are grown on-site at Glynwood by our dedicated crew of farmers and apprentices. We offer two share options for members: a Full Share with pickup every week for $750, or a Half Share with pickup every other week for $390.
